My First Client
Before I coached anyone else, I coached my mum. She's 48, works full-time as a nurse, 12-hour shifts, physically demanding job, zero exercise outside of work, and eating whatever was convenient.
She lost 10kg in 5 months.
What I Didn't Do
I didn't put her on a strict meal plan. I didn't make her count calories. I didn't give her a 5-day gym programme. None of that would have worked with her schedule and her relationship with food.
What I Did
Step 1: Fixed protein. She was eating maybe 40g of protein a day. We brought it up to 100g. Just by adding Greek yoghurt at breakfast, chicken at lunch, and fish at dinner. Nothing extreme.
Step 2: Walked more. She was already on her feet all day at work. On days off, we added a 30-minute walk. That's it. No gym.
Step 3: Reduced liquid calories. She was drinking sugary tea 4-5 times a day. Switching to one sugar instead of two saved roughly 200 calories daily. Over 5 months, that alone accounts for several kilos.
Step 4: Two proper meals a day. She was snacking all day and never eating a real meal. We simplified to 2 decent meals plus a snack, with protein in each.
The Result
10kg lost. More energy on shifts. Better sleep. Clothes she hadn't worn in years fitting again. No gym membership needed.
Why This Matters
If my mum can do it working 12-hour nursing shifts at 48, you can do it. The principles don't change. Eat enough protein. Move more. Remove the obvious junk. Be consistent.
It doesn't need to be complicated. It just needs to be done.
