Why Your Face Still Looks Bloated (Even When You're Lean)

You've dropped body fat but your face still looks puffy. There are specific reasons this happens and specific fixes that work fast.

Lean Body, Puffy Face

You've been dieting. The scale is down. Your arms have veins. But your face still looks swollen in the morning. What's going on?

This is more common than you'd think. And it's rarely about fat.

The Usual Suspects

Cortisol. If you've been dieting aggressively, your cortisol is elevated. Cortisol causes water retention, and your face shows it first. A hard cut with poor sleep is the perfect recipe for a puffy face at low body fat.

Sodium timing. Eating a big salty meal causes temporary water retention that shows up in your face the next morning. The fix isn't eliminating salt. It's keeping your intake consistent so your body doesn't overreact to spikes.

Alcohol. Even one or two drinks can cause noticeable facial bloating the next day. Alcohol dehydrates you, then your body overcorrects by holding water.

Sleep deprivation. Under 7 hours and your face tells the story. Puffy eyes, soft jawline, overall swollen appearance. Sleep is probably the single biggest factor in daily facial appearance.

Allergies and inflammation. Dairy, gluten, or other food sensitivities can cause systemic inflammation that shows in your face. If you're consistently puffy despite being lean and well-hydrated, this is worth investigating.

The Quick Fixes

1. Sleep 8 hours for 3 days straight. Watch what happens to your face.

2. Cut alcohol for a week. The difference is usually obvious.

3. Drink 3 litres of water daily. More water in means less water retained.

4. Keep sodium consistent. Don't swing from low to high day to day.

5. Try eliminating dairy for 2 weeks. See if the puffiness reduces.

When to Stop Worrying

Some facial fullness is genetic. If you're under 15% body fat, sleeping well, hydrated, and not drinking, and your face still looks a bit full, that might just be your face. And that's fine.

The goal isn't to look gaunt. It's to look healthy. Sharp but not starved.
