I Stayed Lean 5 Years Thanks to One Book
One book completely changed how I think about habits, identity, and fitness. It's not a fitness book. But it's the most useful thing I've ever read for staying lean.

Not a Fitness Book
The book that changed my physique the most isn't about training or nutrition. It's Atomic Habits by James Clear.
I read it about 5 years ago and it completely rewired how I approach fitness. Not the workouts. Not the food. The systems behind both.
The Core Idea
You don't rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. That line hit me hard because I'd spent years setting goals and failing. Lose 5kg. Get abs by summer. Hit a 100kg bench. I'd get motivated, go hard, burn out, and restart.
The problem was never the goal. It was that I had no system to sustain progress after the motivation faded.
What I Changed
I stopped setting fitness goals and started building identity-based habits.
Instead of "I want to get lean," I said "I'm someone who trains 3 times a week." Instead of "I need to eat better," I said "I'm someone who hits their protein target every day."
Small shift. Massive difference. Because now I wasn't chasing an outcome. I was voting for the type of person I wanted to become. Every workout was a vote. Every meal was a vote.
The 1% Rule
Getting 1% better each day compounds into something unrecognisable over a year. You don't notice it week to week. But look at photos from 6 months ago and 12 months ago. The compound effect is real.
Why This Keeps You Lean
Diets have an end date. Identity doesn't. When being active and eating well is just who you are, there's no finish line to fall off of.
That's why I've stayed lean for 5 years. Not because I'm disciplined. Because I built a system that runs on autopilot.
The Takeaway
Read the book. But more importantly, stop thinking about fitness as something you do temporarily. Make it something you are permanently.
