High IQ, High Body Fat: What's Actually Happening

Smart guys who overthink everything tend to stay skinny-fat longer than anyone else. Here's why intelligence can actually work against you in fitness.

The Overthinking Trap

Here's something I've noticed after coaching over 100 guys: the smarter you are, the longer you tend to stay skinny-fat. That sounds backwards. But it makes sense when you think about it.

Why Smart Guys Struggle

Analysis paralysis. Intelligent people want to optimise everything before they start. They spend months researching the perfect program, the ideal macro split, the best supplement stack. By the time they've analysed every variable, they still haven't stepped foot in the gym.

Information addiction. Smart guys love learning. They'll consume fitness content for hours and mistake learning for doing. Watching Jeff Nippard videos feels productive. It's not, if you're not applying anything.

Overthinking nutrition. Should I do keto or tracking macros? Intermittent fasting or 5 meals? High carb or low carb? The answer doesn't matter if you're not in a consistent caloric deficit with adequate protein. But the smart brain keeps searching for the optimal approach.

The Irony

Intelligence gives you every tool to succeed at fitness. Analytical thinking, pattern recognition, discipline. But the same intelligence traps you in a research loop because starting something imperfect feels uncomfortable.

The Fix

1. Accept that good enough is good enough. A mediocre program followed consistently will always beat a perfect program you never start.

2. Set a deadline. "I will start this program on Monday regardless of whether I've finished researching." Then do it.

3. Track data, not content. Put the same analytical energy into tracking your workouts and nutrition instead of watching another YouTube video.

4. Embrace simplicity. The guys with the best physiques do the simplest things consistently. That should appeal to your logical brain.

The Reality

Fitness is embarrassingly simple. The basics work. Progressive overload, adequate protein, caloric control, sleep. You already know this. Your intelligence isn't the problem. Your need to optimise before acting is.

Start today. Optimise later.
