The Exercise Science Doesn't Talk About

There's one movement pattern that builds total body strength, athleticism, and coordination better than anything else. And almost nobody does it.

The Missing Movement

Every training program has pushing, pulling, squatting, and hinging. But there's a fifth movement pattern that almost nobody programmes and science rarely studies: loaded carries.

Walking with heavy weight in your hands. That's it. And it might be the most underrated exercise in existence.

What Loaded Carries Do

Everything. Grip strength, core stability, shoulder health, hip stability, cardiovascular fitness, mental toughness. No other single exercise hits this many systems at once.

Farmer's walks, suitcase carries, overhead carries. They all force your body to stabilise under load while moving. This is what real-world strength looks like.

Why Science Ignores It

It's hard to study in a lab. Most exercise research uses isolated movements on machines because they're easier to control. Loaded carries involve the entire body and every rep is slightly different. That makes them hard to standardise for research.

But anyone who's done heavy farmer's walks knows the effect is real. Your traps grow. Your grip gets strong. Your core gets bulletproof. Your conditioning improves.

How to Programme Them

Farmer's Walks: Heavy dumbbells or kettlebells. Walk 40-60 metres. 3-4 sets. Rest 90 seconds between. Use the heaviest weight you can carry with good posture.

Suitcase Carry: One heavy dumbbell in one hand. Walk 30-40 metres. Switch hands. This absolutely destroys your obliques and anti-lateral flexion strength.

Overhead Carry: One kettlebell or dumbbell locked out overhead. Walk 30 metres per arm. Builds shoulder stability like nothing else.

When to Do Them

End of session, 2-3 times a week. They're simple, brutally effective, and take less than 10 minutes.

The Challenge

Pick up the heaviest dumbbells you can carry and walk for 60 seconds. If you can't last 60 seconds, that tells you something about your functional strength that no bench press number ever will.
