The Problem with Just Calisthenics Training
I love calisthenics. I'm a UK champion in it. But if building the best physique possible is your goal, calisthenics alone has some gaps.

Coming from a Calisthenics Champion
I placed 2nd at the UK Weighted Calisthenics Championship. So believe me when I say I love this sport. But I also have to be honest about its limitations for building a complete physique.
The Gaps
Leg development. This is the biggest one. Pistol squats and jump squats are great for athleticism, but they're not going to build the same leg mass as heavy barbell squats or leg press. The loading just isn't there.
Progressive overload is harder. With weights, you add 2.5kg. Simple. With calisthenics, progression means harder variations, which don't always scale smoothly. Going from a regular push-up to an archer push-up is a massive jump. There's no 2.5kg increment equivalent.
Isolation work. Some muscles need direct work to grow. Lateral delts, rear delts, biceps. Calisthenics hits them indirectly but not with enough targeted volume for maximum growth.
What Calisthenics Does Better
Upper body pulling. Nothing beats pull-up variations for building a wide back. I've never found a machine that replicates the stimulus of a weighted pull-up.
Core strength. Levers, L-sits, dragon flags. Calisthenics builds a stronger, more functional core than any crunch machine.
Athleticism. You move better, feel lighter, and develop body control that weight training alone can't give you.
The Best Approach: Hybrid
I train both. Always have. Weighted pull-ups and dips for upper body strength. Barbell squats and RDLs for legs. Ring work for skills and core. Isolation work for the finishing touches.
This is how I programme for my clients too. The best of both worlds. You get the strength and physique of weight training with the athleticism and skills of calisthenics.
The Point
Don't limit yourself to one modality. Use whatever tool builds the result you want. For me, that's a mix. And the results speak for themselves.
